After the election of the 45th President of the United States, I saw a change in people’s minds. We began to repeat history and resolved problems became unresolved again. Racism, sexism, homophobia and violence resurfaced and it seemed like many beliefs that people had held true in the past fell into question again. It was like a nation had fallen into a “Trance” where they were divided and confused in their thinking. When you lose what is right, you have lost your way.
It started to seep into other countries and continents. So in winter 2016-17, I began this ongoing series of portraits, large and small, that visualize this confusion and division in the hope that we might consider where we are headed and how we need to get back to respecting the dignity of all people.
